The second requirement is to be pure and clean. We bathe or shower frequently and put on clean clothes. I feel good after taking a bath and it is practical to do so. In the Old Testament, there was ritualistic cleansing before one when to the Temple. And if one was to meet a very important person, a president, many today would wash and dressup to look good and as a sign of respect. The Lord is the most important person, he requires us to be pure and clean before his throne. But this extends to not only our body but our soul and spirit too.
When one trust in an idol or swear by a false god, that to God breaks the first and second commandments of the Mosaic Covenant. It incurs also a generational curse to the third and fourth generation.
And God spoke all these words: I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I the Lord, your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. (Exodus 20:1-4)
Since marriage is also a covenant, the act of trusting in an idol or swearing by a false god is seen by God as similar to an act of adultery in a marriage.
Rebuke your mother, rebuke her for she is not my wife, and I am not her husband. Let her remove the adulterous look from her face and the unfaithfulness from between her breast. (Hosea 2:2)
And the generational curse is also repeated in the Book of Hosea.
I will not show my love to her children, because they are the children of adultery (Hosea 2:4)
To not know God is a sin. To be godlessness incurs the wrath of God. And perhaps one may never have heard of Jesus Christ but none have an excuse not to know God.
The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his external power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. (Romans 2:18-20)
God through nature, through the world, through various events has revealed himself to all one way or the other. To worship an idol is not only to pray to Baal or Zeus as in ancient Israel or Greece but also to place anything else above God. One can also make an idol out of career, money, family, science, materialism and even oneself. So in one way or another, all have sin against him.
Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. (Deuteronomy 7:9)
There is no difference between Jew and Gentile for all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23).
